Upgrade to Series 2000

You must have Series 1000 installed first. The following steps convert your Series 1000 into Series 2000.

0. Precaution

Upgrade could be a risky business when things are not working as you have expected. We strongly recommand that you do a trial run before you commit to Series 2000. The following procedure can be used as a guideline:

  1. Shut down the server and copy the whole newfire directory to a new location, or server. Let us call it newfire2000.
  2. Use newfire2000 area to test out the upgrade process, so that it will not impact current live site.
  3. After the test is successful, do you upgrade the live site.
  4. Always make a backup of the live site before you do upgrade.

1. Set up Series 2000 License

See Enter New License.

2. Installing JDBC Driver

You must install a JDBC 2.x driver to connect to your database. Your database can be run on a separate host on the network. The JDBC driver takes care of the network connection to your database.

2.1 Obtaining a JDBC 2.x Driver

Depend on the database you have, you may choose from a list of JDBC 2.x drivers. A comprehensive list of these drivers can be found at http://industry.java.sun.com/products/jdbc/drivers. Do not use JDBC 1.x drivers. See our certified Database Drivers and URLs.

Note: The JDBC-ODBC Bridge driver from Merant and Java Software is already included in this software.

2.2 Installing a JDBC 2.x Driver

Packaging of drivers is different from vender to vender. In most cases, there are 2 ways: (1) a zip/jar file; (2) a class directory (e.g. com/*).

For case (1): rename the zip or jar file to "jdbc.zip" or "jdbc.jar" and put it under <newfire>/lib directory. For case (2) put the directory and all its sub-directories and files under <newfire>/classes. Create the classes directory if necessary.

Note: The JDBC-ODBC Bridge driver from Merant and Java Software is already installed in this software.

2.2 Configuring database parameters

Use the Administrator Menu to configure the database parameters for the JDBC driver. See Configuration.

3. Migrate data from Series 1000

Now you must migrate all data created in Series 1000 to the database. If it is run from Series 1000 license, there is no effect. Before you run data migration, you must start the server and connect to the server as an administrator from the Administrator Menu.

All objects will be migrated.

Note: After migration, all User data are stored in database, user logon depends on proper database connection (proper database parameter setups). If you loose database or database connection, you will not be able to log on to the system.

You must run this step to complete the upgrade.
