Install and Upgrade

1. Upgrade from Previous Version

Skip this section if you are installing for the first time.

Before Upgrade

  1. Read Release Notes for changes and new features that may affect you.
  2. Install the new release on a separate location for evaluation. Test it completely before upgrade.

Upgrade Checklist

  1. Backup current New Fire Server, see Making Backups
  2. Replicate current New Fire Server by copying the current newfire directory (say newfireA) and all its subdirectories to a separate location (newfireB), preferably on a separate machine.
  3. If you are using database, as in Series 2000, you also need to duplicate your database data in a different schema/user, preferably on a separate database. This is your new database for newfireB.
  4. Start up newfireB using newfireB/bin/startserver.
  5. First thing you do is to go to the Configuration and change the database parameters to point to your new database for newfireB. Test that it actually points to the new database for newfireB, otherwise you corrupt the database for newfireA. (Alternatively, you may also modify the newfireB/data/data.sys file to modify the database parameters before you start up newfireB.)
  6. So far, we duplicated newfireA to newfireB. They are identical and separate at this point.
  7. Shut down newfireB using newfireB/bin/stopserver.
  8. Install the new version on top of newfireB directory, by select newfireB directory to install to.
  9. Start up newfireB using newfireB/bin/startserver.
  10. If you have to run newfireA at the same time to minimize down time, you need to change some port numbers in newfireB before start up. See Dual Installations.
  11. Test thoroughly to make sure every thing is working as expected.
  12. If the upgrade is not satisfactory, remove newfireB and its database.
  13. Notice that we did not disturb any thing in the old version (newfireA).

This upgrade will not remove your previous customizations. However, any new customizations from the release will not show up on your update.

Upgrade Note

If you upgrade from a far earlier version, class schemas may have changed since then, some new customizations may not be applicable to earlier ones. You may encounter some customization errors which can be corrected by manually seeking out and correcting them through customization.

See Post Upgrade Notes on manual setups and customization after upgrade.

2. Install for the First Time

Install for Windows

The download file setup.exe (file name may be different), can be run from Windows Explorer. Double-click setup.exe from the directory you downloaded. You can also run the setup file from DOS prompt by typing setup.

Note: The installed software is defaulted to be Series 1000.

Install for Unix

Download the file install.sh (file name may be different). This download file contains the installation script and the software archive all in one file. To install, simply run it as if it is a shell script file:

sh install.sh

Note: Your Unix system must have the unzip utility and you can access unzip in your path.

Note: You don't have to be root to do the installation.

Automatic Data Upgrade

If you are installing on top of a previous installation, some data may be upgraded at the end of the installation.

In case that the upgrade is not successful during installation, you can run the upgrade manually (and multiple times) from <newfire>/bin directory by typing:

admin Upgrade
